I resolved to watch this film because it is reportedly set at the end of the Thirty Years' War—even if the trailers, judging by the costumes visible therein, were not entirely unambiguous in this regard. At the very least, the historical era is more discernible here than in the 2024 release "Des Teufels Bad", where the costuming looked more like modern theater—featuring garments spanning the 17th through 20th centuries—and where scenes in the trailer were more reminiscent of a 20th-century agricultural production cooperative than of 18th-century Switzerland with its specific traditional dress [1]. Prior to its release, rumors circulated that the backstory for the character "Rose" was actually based on that of Anastasius Rosenstengel—or rather, Catharina Margaretha Linck (1687–1721)—even though the latter served as a soldier in the 18th century [2]. I have already listened attentively to a podcast discussing this very topic [3].

Broadly speaking—since the armies of the Thirty Years' War were not yet standing armies—it was likely easier for a woman to blend in within the military ranks during that conflict. After all, armies during the Thirty Years' War were typically [4] based entirely on voluntary enlistment. Nevertheless, beyond the case of Linck, we have other contemporary examples of women who fought in the War of the Spanish Succession. The film "Me and Marlborough" [5] humorously depicted a woman who followed her husband to war, drawing inspiration in part from a historical figure [6]. Consequently, the portrayal of a woman as a soldier in this era is not an entirely novel concept for cinema.
