Since we are in Wackershofen in 1746 this time, and even touching on the topic of the military, it seemed natural to revisit the Battle of Rocoux. I have already presented a great deal of information about it due to its historical context [1].

Meine Karte der Schlacht. - My map of the battle. (copyright: A. Hanselmann)

There are masses of cavalry behind Ance ready to react. The impact of Hammerstein could pay off as it happened in the historical battle. (Foto: C. Hanselmann)

However, we somehow lost the numerous photographs at that time, and that was an additional reason to turn our attention to this battle again, apart from the fact that the Bavarians, who arrived in Flanders from Bavaria in late summer 1746, were in time for this great battle [2].

Ein noch besseres Überblicksbild. - A better view. (Foto: F. Hanselmann)

This time, I and two other players took on the roles of the French army. I controlled the bulk of the army, while someone else took charge of the Prince de Clermont at the heart of the battle, and a third person controlled the reserve troops under Contades. The allied forces were controlled by two players. The Austrian army comprised about half of the total, primarily because the Jacobite uprising had resulted in numerous troops being recalled to England and Scotland.

Hanselmann)

I had decided that we would once again attack the Allied left flank, as we had in our last game. There was a slight chance of capturing Fexhe, since there was no Austrian infantry there. The problem was the deep ravine, which would be time-consuming to cross.

Instead of expecting our attack, and unlike in the historical battle, the entire allied cavalry was sent down from the heights behind Ance to flank Clermont's troops attacking Ance. The French light infantry had no real chance of resisting. I decided decisively to support Clermont by sending Seedorf's Swiss troops. Another option would have been to occupy the now-vacant hill.

However, the Allies reacted quickly to the impending collapse of their left wing, sending in not only the Dutch infantry but also concentrating their artillery fire on Seedorf's Swiss troops.

- The poor light French infantry is routed. (Foto: F. Hanselmann)

In front of Ance the battle was decided. By Round 3, the corps under the Prince de Clermont had already broken [3]—yet without our having achieved our objective of dealing a crushing blow to Waldeck’s troops, let alone capturing the two Dutch batteries. Although the Bavarians defending Ance were indeed forced to retreat, they were replaced in the nick of time by Dutch light infantry and Swiss troops in Dutch service; consequently, we were unable to capture even the village itself.

- The Pollereski hussars are wiped out in the melee - but even some Hanoverian and Dutch cavalry are beaten. In the center, I merely attempted—by exerting pressure through the numerous infantry under Hérouville and Maubourg—to force the Allies to focus their attention on the defense of the villages of Rocoux and Varoux. It was not until the third turn that I was able to deploy three batteries near Lontin and Aleurs; these were at least able to bring the Dutch positions under fire, though they succeeded only in forcing the Regiment of the Princes of Schwarzburg [4] to retreat. In the center, my troops lost their commander, Maubourg, during the struggle for the villages, while on the opposing side, General Veldtmann [5] was struck.

- My only real success against the Austrians: their hussars are charging my remaining infantry at our left flank. (Foto: F. Hanselmann)

- The Allied commanders expertely regrouped their troops. During the second turn I'm still driving my best batteries on the road between Aleurs and Lontin. Therefore I can only rely on my batallions in the center. (Foto: F. Hanselmann)

My attempt to advance against Fexhe proved similarly unsuccessful. Right at the outset of the battle, the Austrian hussars stationed there—occupying an exposed position as indicated by contemporary maps [6]—had put the Volontaires Royaux to flight. Subsequently, however, these hussars misunderstood an order [7] and were wiped out in a charge. Shortly before reaching his designated objective, Clermont-Gallerand dispatched his infantry up the hill situated between Enick and Fexhe, supported by cavalry under Thiard on the flank to prevent a flanking attack by the massed Austrian cavalry. This proved to be a mistake; for the infantry came under heavy fire and was routed.

- The situation around Ance from the Allied perspective. Veldtmann is fallen among his Dutch. In the end, the result for us was a French defeat after just three rounds. We played for about three hours—though, in any case, we didn't have enough time that day to complete the six rounds I had originally aimed for. I think we were a bit unlucky with the dice. The reserves under Contades and du Chayla did not arrive in time to make an impact—on our left flank, for instance. The deep formation of the French attack columns also proved disastrous; as seen with the brigades under Seedorf (Swiss) and Putanges (Royal Suédois), routing battalions at the head of the columns swept the battalions positioned behind them along in their flight. Perhaps, in the end, we were also too impatient; under different circumstances, I might have withdrawn Seedorf’s brigade following its losses in order to rally the troops.

The leading Swiss in red and Royal Suédois in blue will weap along some of  the units behind them in their rout. (4 units of the corps of the prince de Clermont are routed. BP -1.) (Foto: C. Hanselmann)

The Allies defended very actively and aggressively, skillfully exploiting their elevated positions. The Allied artillery was able to fire continuously, whereas ours found its fields of fire obstructed by the masses of troops. They practically always succeeded in maneuvering their forces, while we botched many of our movements. Congratulations to the Princes of Waldeck and Lorraine!

    1. You just need a very large table or very small units to get one of the largest battles of the period in your gaming room. :-) I did love it too. Unfortunately I have to little time to repeat my PBeM again. Maybe it was easier before organizing all these events.
