Since we are in Wackershofen in 1746 this time, and even touching on the topic of the military, it seemed natural to revisit the Battle of Rocoux. I have already presented a great deal of information about it due to its historical context [1].

However, we somehow lost the numerous photographs at that time, and that was an additional reason to turn our attention to this battle again, apart from the fact that the Bavarians, who arrived in Flanders from Bavaria in late summer 1746, were in time for this great battle [2].

This time, I and two other players took on the roles of the French army. I controlled the bulk of the army, while someone else took charge of the Prince de Clermont at the heart of the battle, and a third person controlled the reserve troops under Contades. The allied forces were controlled by two players. The Austrian army comprised about half of the total, primarily because the Jacobite uprising had resulted in numerous troops being recalled to England and Scotland.
I had decided that we would once again attack the Allied left flank, as we had in our last game. There was a slight chance of capturing Fexhe, since there was no Austrian infantry there. The problem was the deep ravine, which would be time-consuming to cross.
Instead of expecting our attack, and unlike in the historical battle, the entire allied cavalry was sent down from the heights behind Ance to flank Clermont's troops attacking Ance. The French light infantry had no real chance of resisting. I decided decisively to support Clermont by sending Seedorf's Swiss troops. Another option would have been to occupy the now-vacant hill.

However, the Allies reacted quickly to the impending collapse of their left wing, sending in not only the Dutch infantry but also concentrating their artillery fire on Seedorf's Swiss troops.

In front of Ance the battle was decided. By Round 3, the corps under the Prince de Clermont had already broken [3]—yet without our having achieved our objective of dealing a crushing blow to Waldeck’s troops, let alone capturing the two Dutch batteries. Although the Bavarians defending Ance were indeed forced to retreat, they were replaced in the nick of time by Dutch light infantry and Swiss troops in Dutch service; consequently, we were unable to capture even the village itself.

A spectacular game there Andre and good to see you reached a conclusion, even if you only played 3 of the planned 6 Turns. Certainly plenty of replay value in this scenario:).
AntwortenLöschenWith so many brigades on the table it was difficult to play faster. But it was a nice experience even if you are on the losing side.
LöschenI remember when you tackled this battle as a multi-player PBeM game. Sadly, I have lost all of my correspondence on that earlier battle too. I would still like to bring this battle to my game table one day.
AntwortenLöschenYou just need a very large table or very small units to get one of the largest battles of the period in your gaming room. :-) I did love it too. Unfortunately I have to little time to repeat my PBeM again. Maybe it was easier before organizing all these events.
LöschenVery appropriate to play this battle now, being so close to the anniversary. As ever, your table looks splendid.
AntwortenLöschenDid you know that the most recent episode of Prime and Load podcast was about this battle?
No. I didn't heard the podcast yet. I thought that the report would be best to be posted on Oct. 11th, although we played in April. I need at least some weeks to prepare every report. It's really interesting to read all of your comments. Thank you so much.
LöschenThe podcast was very interesting. Thank you for the comment!
LöschenWhat an impressive table and collection of miniatures, thanks for sharing this AAR with us here!
