1620s Dumas-Campaign?

At the request of a tabletop player, I want to sacrifice myself. We started a new PML campaign with a few new characters. We have previously used the ruleset for historical skirmishes [1]. A few manufacturers have released models of figures that fit the famous novels of Alexandre Dumas such as "Les trois mousquetaires" [2].

A while ago the two films came out in France that have little to do with the novel. The second half of "Les trois Mousquetaires" shows the king's musketeers in action in the war. The many sets in 1/72 are of no use for the Thirty Years' War, as the king's musketeers, for example, were not there at Freiburg in 1644 [3].

Since "Les trois Mousquetaires" is set in the 1620s, I thought it would be appropriate to set a campaign in this time. For some reason, in a parallel world, Milady apparently survived the executioner of Lille. She has to make ends meet as an agent and in our first game she was looking for compensation for the lack of income from Cardinal Richelieu's donations. So, based on a scenario from the rulebook [4], a squad of mercenaries escorting a war chest was ambushed. The guard group wanted to go splashing in a pond on the side of the road and suddenly they were attacked.

After a lot of luck, the first battle of the campaign ended in a bit of a mess for Milady. I have a character (Augustus von Wiesel) who is pretty stubborn and can avoid duels with impunity. To Milady's surprise, my main character challenged Milady to a duel and got her out of the way. I still couldn't steal the war chest.

Salzträger und Salzkärrner - Salt carriers and salt carters

 Dieses Jahr soll das Thema unserer Veranstaltung im August der Transport von Salz sein. Das ist ziemlich anspruchsvoll, da wir dazu zum einen sehr viel recherchieren mussten und zum anderen auch der Forschung manche Details nicht ganz bekannt sind. So scheint es auch dem Experten unglaubwürdig, wenn wir erfahren, dass die Salzträger 6-8 Meß Salz (das wären 98 bis 130 Kilo) geschleppt haben sollen [1].

This year the theme of our event in August will be the transport of salt. This is quite challenging because, on the one hand, we had to do a lot of research and, on the other hand, some details are not entirely known to researchers. It also seems unbelievable to the expert when we learn that the salt carriers were said to have carried 6-8 measuring salt (that would be 98 to 130 kilos) [1].

Wie dem auch sei, darf man sich das Leben des Salzträgers für die Haller im Jahre 1775 als wohl kein besonders rosiges vorstellen. Der Verdienst, auf den wir weiter unten eingehen werden, war so gering, dass er den Bewohnern landwirtschaftlich besser nutzbarer Gebiete als zu unlukrativ erschien. Daher übernahmen beinahe ausschließlich die Leute des Mainhardter Waldes, von denen in den 1750ern bis 70ern einige Räuber wurden, aus Not diese Arbeit als Nebenerwerb [2]. Immerhin waren die Salzträger offenbar anders als die Fuhrleute durch die von der hällischen Obrigkeit eingerichteten Einschränkungen auf Straßen und Wegen weniger betroffen. Die Landheeg und anderen Einrichtungen sollten ja dazu dienen die Warentransporte durch das Land zu steuern [3] und beispielsweise die Kaufleute dazu zwingen bestimmte Straßen zu verwenden an denen die Zollstationen von Schwäbisch Hall - wie beispielsweise am Michelfelder Landturm - lagen. Dahingegen bewegten sich die Salzträger recht frei durch das Land, was wir daran sehen wie wenig Notiz man zum Beispiel von den Räubern nahm, die getarnt als Salzträger an einem der großen Coups - dem Überfall auf die Postkutsche an der Cröffelbacher Steige 1768 [4]. Auch das Ende der Mainhardter Bande 1773 [5] stellte keine Zäsur für den Salztransport dar, auch wenn einige Salzträger dadurch ihr Leben verloren. Im Gegenteil war durch die Inovationen in der Salzgewinnung [6], die zu einer Erhöhung der Produktion von 20.000 Zentnern auf 65.000 bis 80.000 Zentner die Mengen, die transportiert werden mussten, entsprechend auch gewaltig gestiegen.

Be that as it may, one cannot imagine the life of the salt carrier for the people of Hall in 1775 as being particularly rosy. The income, which we will discuss below, was so low that it seemed too unlucrative to the residents of areas with better agricultural use. Therefore, almost exclusively the people of the Mainhardt Forest, some of whom became robbers in the 1750s to 70s, took on this work as a sideline out of necessity [2]. After all, unlike the carters, the salt carriers were apparently less affected by the restrictions on roads and paths imposed by the Hellenic authorities. The Landheeg and other facilities were intended to control the transport of goods through the country [3] and, for example, to force merchants to use certain roads on which the customs stations of Schwäbisch Hall - such as the Michelfelder Landturm - were located. The salt carriers, on the other hand, moved quite freely through the country, which we can see in how little attention was paid to the robbers, for example, who, disguised as salt carriers, took part in one of the big coups - the attack on the mail coach on the Cröffelbacher Steige in 1768 [4]. The end of the Mainhardt gang in 1773 [5] did not represent a turning point for salt transport, even if some salt carriers lost their lives as a result. On the contrary, due to the innovations in salt production [6], which increased production from 20,000 hundredweight to 65,000 to 80,000 hundredweight, the quantities that had to be transported also increased enormously.

Schwäbisch Hall 1775

1775 scheint ersteinmal kein irgendwie bedeutendes Jahr, wenn wir auf Deutschland und insbesondere den Schwäbischen Kreis schauen. Während es in Frankreich große Umwälzungen gab, wurde die Welt aber vor allem durch die Ereignisse in den 13 Kolonien erschüttert, die in Zeitungsmeldungen auch nach Deutschland strahlten. Wenn wir in die 1770er schauen, so wurden diese bis dahin durch die Unruhen in Polen [1], die auch Deutschland betrafen und die Hungerkatastrophe bestimmt [2]. Die Mainhardter Bande beschäftigte auch lange Zeit die Gemüter und die Behörden der angrenzenden Territorien [3]. Schauen wir in die zeitgenössischen Zeitungen, so erfahren wir vor allem von den Einschnitten, die mit der Aufhebung des Jesuitenordens überall in katholischen Gebieten auch im Heiligen Römischen Reich einher gingen [4]. Die Konkurrenz um die Vormacht im Reich zwischen Österreich und Preußen hielt an. 

At first glance, 1775 does not seem to be a significant year in any way if we look at Germany and especially the Swabian Circle. While there were major upheavals in France, the world was primarily shaken by the events in the 13 colonies, which were also reflected in newspaper reports in Germany. If we look at the 1770s, up until then they were dominated by the unrest in Poland [1], which also affected Germany, and the famine catastrophe [2]. The Mainhardt gang also occupied the minds and authorities of the neighboring territories for a long time [3]. If we look at contemporary newspapers, we learn primarily about the cuts that accompanied the abolition of the Jesuit order everywhere in Catholic areas, including in the Holy Roman Empire [4]. The competition for supremacy in the empire between Austria and Prussia continued.

Andererseits nahm der Einfluss Frankreichs auf das Reich ab. Die "Augspurgische Ordinari Postzeitung" frohlockte über die Entlassung der höchst wirksamen Minister Louis XV [5] und die Wiedereinsetzung des alten Parlamentes, welches ja alle Reformen vor 1771 behindert hatte [6]. Es ist hier die Frage, ob die "schmeichelhafteste Hofnung", welche die Zeitung erwähnt, vielleicht eher darauf abzielte, dass Frankreich durch die Veränderungen unter Louis XVI wieder politisch an Macht verlor. Tatsächlich kam es ja unter Louis XVI trotz der Sparmaßnahmen [7] zur großen Finanzkrise und Schwäche der Monarchie gegenüber der Erstarkung der Aristokratie.

On the other hand, France's influence on the empire declined. The "Augspurgische Ordinari Postzeitung" rejoiced over the dismissal of the highly effective ministers of Louis XV [5] and the reinstatement of the old parliament, which had hindered all reforms before 1771 [6]. The question here is whether the "most flattering hope" that the newspaper mentions was perhaps aimed at France losing political power again as a result of the changes under Louis XVI. In fact, despite the austerity measures [7], under Louis XVI the royal power was in decline while the aristocracy regained influence on politics.

Schwäbisch Hall war von alledem kaum betroffen. Luxusgüter wie Seiden wurden teurer [9] - aber das kümmerte ja den einfachen Landmann nicht. Als recht folgenschwer auf die Zukunft Schwäbisch Halls sollte sich das sich abzeichnende Aussterben der Brandenburg-Ansbachischen Markgrafenhäuser auswirken [10] mit dem Hall ohnehin wegen des Amtes Hohnhardt in beständigem Konflikt verwickelt war. 

Schwäbisch Hall was hardly affected by all of this. Luxury goods such as silk became more expensive [9] - but the simple farmer didn't care about that. The looming extinction of the Brandenburg-Ansbach margrave houses was to have a very serious impact on the future of Schwäbisch Hall [10] with which Hall was already involved in constant conflict because of the Hohnhardt district.
