Historiker von nebenan / historians alongside with Thorsten Butter P. 2

Hallo Thorsten!

Thorsten Butter: Sehr sehr gut!

Hello Thorsten!

Now we are back from Wackershofen and I am really looking forward to your impressions.

How did you like the event?

Thorsten Butter: Really really good! The open-air museum is simply beautiful. From historic buildings to meadows and animals, everything is there. The whole location is rounded off by a good middle-class restaurant, where you always want to stop for a cold beer.

The "players" were always friendly, nice and always open for a chat. Also, the most diverse people simply come together in the hobby. It's just refreshing to watch the maids sewing while you sit next to each other as 3 gentlemen and enjoy a pipe.

André Hanselmann: Did you feel well prepared by our historical info or what can be found on our blog[1]?

Thorsten Butter: Definitely from the setting! Through the historical pamphlet or tales, life in the 18th century was no mystery to me. The information added up well to what I already know myself.

What I wasn't aware of is how close historical crafts are to modern ones. Whether drawing iron or rammer, everything is similar today. Just machine driven.

Hier nochmals vielen Dank an Sonja.

A. Hanselmann: Was there a personal highlight at the event for you? Everyone has their own focus and if I like to remember a ride with my Grabenreiter at earlier Wackershofen events, then most of the others didn't have the experience at all.

T. Butter: Two events immediately come to mind. First the daily fire for breakfast. Creating a fire early in the morning, as the first person awake, with just wood, a candle and flints is a wonderful experience. Here I have to admit that by the second day at the latest, I had to help out a bit with the lighter in order to be able to offer hot water on time.

The other was the kitchen, more precisely my introduction to the use of the historic oven. Here again many thanks to Sonja. It is fascinating how heat is created and regulated in a brick oven. A true interaction between baker and oven manager.

A. Hanselmann: We always try to optimize our event for the museum, the visitors but also our participants. Do you have a few suggestions for improvement that fit here to the blog?

T. Butter: From an educational point of view, I would have liked to have had more things to touch. Children in particular are fascinated if they can touch the tool themselves. Or just put on the pointed cap for a photo.

However, I understand that the tool needs to be treated properly and can break. Also, something like hats are a personal good, which one would often not give to strangers.

A. Hanselmann: Can you imagine that you could take something with you as an experience, for example as a teacher or historian? You said when we drove there that the 18th century wasn't your main focus during your studies. But that's why it's sometimes interesting, or what do you think?

T. Butter: As a historian, I learned some new things. Historians often overlook what is possible, and now that I have “played it out” myself, the ideas are of course much more composed.

The most beautiful thing about the event in a historical and educational sense, however, is how time is conveyed. The Middle Ages are often still described as "dark times". The early modern period is then indeed the transition to modern times, but many achievements are of course from the Middle Ages. With this in mind, I am particularly looking forward to next year. When it comes to hygiene, there is a lot of misinformation in the population. I am already looking forward to showing visitors that body care is not a 19th century achievement.

A. Hanselmann: Thank you for the interview! It was a lot of fun with you in Wackershofen and as an interview partner.

Notizen / Notes:

1) Zum Thema der Veranstaltung: Wackershofen Anno Domini: Wie klaut man ein Wirtshausschild? - How you can steel the sign of a tavern? 1749

- Due to the Corona problem, we have had less contact with visitors lately. We used to dance directly with the visitors, e.g. visitors threshed grain with us, etc.

  1. Interesting perspective from Thorsten. Spending time at your living museum would provide a unique experience. Some facets remind me of camping from my youth. Where are the participants housed and fed during the re-enactment?

    1. I slept in a small house from the 1480s and Thorsten in a building from the first half of the 17th century (house from Sachsenflur). Most of the meals were cooked in the tavern visible in that posting and in the upcoming posts. The oven is from the mid 18th century. Our cook can make meals from the period. There are for example two books of food from the 1780s printed in Schwäbisch Hall.
