We have now finally managed to hold an event in Wackershofen for the first time since summer 2019. I don't want to waste too many words here about the conditions imposed by the current corona crisis. Therefore I want to concentrate on the course of the event. Many of our participants had already arrived on Thursday.

On Friday I acted as "Amtmann" (bailiff), but from the afternoon on again as mayor of “Bubenorbis”. The bailiff came into the district to speak to the pastor of Michelfeld - which was a bit strange because I, as the organizer, knew long before that the role would remain vacant this time. The idea behind it was that the bailiff could also inform the important people in the Swabian-Hall' district of the Rosengarten about the news on the way to the pastor. After a while he met the pastor's wife, whom he announced that he would visit later. Because he had found out that an important boundary stone had been removed [1]. While riding around in the area, it took him and his trench rider a long time to find the stone lying off a road on an embankment. The bailiff decided that the stone should be erected again immediately [2].

Then the bailiff visited the pastor's wife. He informed her of the decisions of the Hall magistrate that were favorable for the territory. Of course, her husband should not fail to mention such things in the next sermon, such as the lifting of the "fruit barrier", i.e. the lifting of the ban on selling certain foods abroad [3]. After a good cup of coffee and refreshed, the bailiff and trench rider rode to the Steigengasthaus on the Rote Steige, where they had lunch in front of the house. Before the bailiff went "to Hall" again [4], he instructed the ditch rider to take care of the repair of the road and to take care of the boundary stone.

The schoolmaster of Bubenorbis taught not only the children but also some adults to read and write. The enactment of the catechism in particular was considered necessary into advanced adulthood [5]. Another maid from my household arrived, which made our house complete. There was music and dancing in the Steigengasthaus. So ended a very pleasant day.

We want to inform our dear readers, that we would be happy if you would support the open-air-museum Wackershofen which had/has a lot of problems due to the current Corona-crisis because the museum had/has to close and cancel many events. Here is a link to the museum: https://www.wackershofen.de/

Stadtarchiv Schwäbisch Hall Sig. 10/173 - The boundary stones played an important role within the local communities. Even in an early community's order from 1598 of the village of Oberaspach a penalty of 1 florin is mentioned in article 11.

- That was a request by the museum but was very nice for our event too.

  1. Great to see you have been able to hold an event again. As always the text and phots are really good:). We still use boundary stones in some areas where they use medieval strip farming, with them marking out the boundaries of each strip etc.

    1. That sounds great as we in Germany are losing more and more of such historical relicts. Thank you for your nice comment.

  2. Very enjoyable look into your other hobby. Are you wearing a wig or is that natural hair? Now I know the meaning of "Amtmann". I always wondered about that.

    1. The grey wig is made of horse hair. But in most cases I have my own hair powdered.

The Amtmann is something like a sheriff or bailiff. He is responsible for the administration and police of a district. Some lived in Hall, others had fortified houses. The Hohnhardt castle was the residence of the "Amtmann" of the Hohnhardt district.

  3. As Jonathan and Steve, most interesting insight into your re-enacting ('living history'). It's a fine contribution to the preservation and appreciation of history. The horses are fine steeds and look like they were well-behaved too!

    1. Thank you very much!
Yes Rufus and Emmeran are really lovely horses (and I'm not a horse-girl!), they accept non skilled riders without problems and Rufus loves to be helpful at any occasion.
