Dr. Hildegund Bemmann hat sich wissenschaftlich intensiv mit dem Thema Materialkultur beschäftigt. Ihre Doktorarbeit ist unter dem Titel "Rheinisches Tafelsilber - Silbernes Prunk- und Tafelgerät des nördlichen Rheinlandes von 1550 bis 1800"[1] im Druck erschienen. Beruflich war sie in den letzten Jahren in der Gegend von Passau im Antiquitätenhandel als Expertin tätig. Daneben nahm sie bereits an zahlreichen unserer Anno Domini- und Landleben-Veranstaltungen im Hohenloher Freilandmuseum Wackershofen teil.  

Dr. Hildegund Bemmann has dealt intensively with the topic of material culture. Her doctoral thesis has appeared in print under the title "Rheinisches Tafelsilber - Silbernes Prunk- und Tafelgerät...    " [1]. Professionally she has worked as an expert in the antique trade in the Passau area in recent years. In addition she has already participated in numerous of our Anno Domini and country life events in the Hohenloher Freilandmuseum Wackershofen.

1. Hallo liebe Gundi! Ich hoffe, Du bist gesund und munter. Jetzt hätte ich gleich mal eine ganz aktuelle Frage: was machst Du so während des Lockdowns? Liest Du auch viele Bücher?

Vielen Dank, bislang hat mich das Virus noch verschont. Zum Glück bin ich jemand, der niemals Langeweile hat. Für meine neue Aufgabe im Evangelischen Bildungswerk, von dem ich mit der Entwicklung eines pädagogischen Konzepts für die Bildungsarbeit auf Schloss Ortenburg beauftragt wurde, habe ich viel über die Reformationsgeschichte der Region Niederbayern und Oberösterreich gelesen.

Im Sommer entdeckte ich in einem oberösterreichischen Stadtmuseum zufällig einen Schatz wundervoll erhaltener Kleidungstücke aus dem 18. und frühen 19. Jahrhundert. Zusammen mit einer Hobbykollegin habe ich diese untersucht, beschrieben, fotografiert und z. T. die Schnitte abgenommen. Einige Stücke habe ich für mich reproduziert.

Daneben habe ich Projekte angepackt, die ich wegen des hohen Zeitaufwandes immer beiseite geschoben hatte, mich aber eigentlich gereizt haben, und sogar fertiggestellt! In der Hauptsache waren dies Stickarbeiten.

Weil ich jetzt erst mal wirklich genug zum Anziehen habe, habe ich mich aktuell an die Anfertigung und Ausstattung einer Modepuppe für die Darstellung im 18. Jahrhundert gewagt. Man könnte also sagen, dass ich die Zeit gut genutzt habe...

1. Hello dear Gundi! I hope you are safe and sound. Now I would have a very topical question: what are you doing during the lockdown? Do you also read a lot of books?

Thank you, so far the virus has spared me. Fortunately, I'm someone who is never bored. For my new job at the Evangelical Educational Organization, from which I was commissioned to develop a pedagogical concept for educational work at Ortenburg Castle, I read a lot about the history of the Reformation in the Lower Bavaria and Upper Austria region.

In the summer I accidentally discovered a treasure trove of wonderfully preserved pieces of clothing from the 18th and early 19th centuries in an Upper Austrian city museum. Together with a hobby colleague, I examined, described, photographed and partly took the patterns. I have reproduced some pieces for myself.

In addition, I tackled projects that I had always pushed aside due to the high expenditure of time, but actually tickled me, and even finished! Mainly this was embroidery. 

Because I now really have enough to wear, I have currently dared to make and equip a fashion doll for representation in the 18th century. So you could say that I used the time well ... 

2. Ich glaube wir sind vor vielen Jahren miteinander dadurch in Kontakt miteinander gekommen, weil Du für Cecilia einen Stecker bestickt hast. Damals warst Du auf jeden Fall noch nicht bei uns auf den Veranstaltungen. War das für Dich die Initialzündung?

Ich hatte die Szene im Netz schon eine Weile beobachtet, mir aber lange Zeit nicht zugetraut da mitzumachen. In sofern war der Kontakt durch die Stickarbeit für Cecilia die erste persönliche „Tuchfühlung“.

2. I think we came into contact with each other many years ago because you embroidered a stomacher for Cecilia. At that time you were definitely not at the events with us. Was that the initial spark for you?

I had been watching the scene on the net for a while, but for a long time I didn't trust myself to take part. In this respect, the contact through the embroidery was the first personal "touch" for Cecilia.

3. Du hast ja in dem Sinne das Hobby nicht allein angefangen, sondern von der ersten Anno Domini-Veranstaltung an war Dein Ehemann als Pfarrer mit dabei. Ich habe selber festgestellt bei meiner Recherche für "meinen" Ratsherrn, dass es unheimlich schwierig ist Details über die Kleidung heraus zu finden - das wird nicht einfacher dadurch, dass die scheinbar offizielle Kleidung der Ratsherren auf den Bildern im Museum[2] [3] schwarz ist. Ich habe praktisch keine Originale gefunden, sondern nur Bildquellen und Inventare genutzt. Ging es Dir da besser für die Kleidung des Pfarrers?

Zum Glück gibt es zahlreiche Darstellungen von Pfarrern aus dem 18. Jh. Die Stoffwahl war auch nicht so kompliziert, weil diese ja nur schwarz gekleidet waren. Der Schnitt entsprach dem der herrschenden Mode – vielleicht etwas konservativer. Rüschen oder gar Spitzengarnituren am Hemd findet man eher selten oder gar nicht.

3. In that sense, you didn't start your hobby alone, but your husband was there as a pastor from the first Anno Domini event. During my research for "my" councilor, I found out that it is incredibly difficult to find out details about the clothing - this is not made easier by the fact that the apparently official clothing of the councilors in the pictures in the museum [2] [3] is black. I practically didn't find any originals, just used image sources and inventories. Have you been luckyer for the priest's clothes?

Fortunately, there are numerous depictions of pastors from the 18th century. The choice of fabric was also not that complicated, because they were only dressed in black. The cut corresponded to that of the prevailing fashion - perhaps a little more conservative. Ruffles or even lace trimmings on shirts are scarce or not existing at all.

4. Sehr beeindruckend fand ich immer, dass Du trotz Deiner akademischen Ausrichtung als Historikerin doch sehr praktisch veranlagt bist. Du kannst prima Brot backen in unseren Backöfen in Wackershofen und sammelst auch Kräuter. Woher kommt Deine Affinität und praktische Begabung?

Warum sollte man als Kunsthistorikerin nicht auch praktisch veranlagt sein? Ich muss zugeben, dass ich das Fach nie so „verkopft“ betrieben habe. Daher habe ich auch für meine Dissertation ein „handfestes“ Thema gewählt. Die Geschichte praktisch und unmittelbar erfahrbar darzustellen, kommt mir deshalb auch so entgegen. 

4. I always found it very impressive that despite your academic orientation as a historian, you are very practical. You can bake bread in our ovens in Wackershofen and also collect herbs. Where does your affinity and practical talent come from?

As an art historian, why shouldn't you have a practical disposition? I have to admit that I have never been so “heady” about the subject. That's why I chose a “tangible” topic for my dissertation. So presenting the story in a practical and directly tangible way suits me.

5. Du bist ja mittlerweile irgendwie ein Teil der Familie geworden und ich finde es daher stimmig, dass wir zumindest bei den Landleben-Veranstaltungen auch eine Familie zusammen spielen. Nun muss ich eventuell erklären, warum meine Mutter im April nicht dabei ist (falls unsere Veranstaltung stattfindet). Hast Du eine historisch schlüssige Erklärung? Vielleicht ein Besuch bei Verwandten?

Das ist doch eine gute Idee! Die Nichte im Nachbardorf hat ihr erstes Kind bekommen und braucht Unterstützung. Meine „Kinder“ sind ja schon „groß“ und brauchen mich nicht mehr so dringend.

5. In the meantime you have somehow become part of the family and I therefore think it is right that we play a family together at least at the country life events. Now I might have to explain why my mother won't be there in April (if our event takes place). Do you have a historically conclusive explanation? Maybe a visit to relatives?

That's a good idea! The niece in the neighboring village has had her first child and needs support. My "children" are already "fully grown" and no longer need me so badly.

6. Wenn es um die Form von Besteck oder auch Kerzenhaltern geht, komme ich immer gerne mit Fragen auf Dich zu. Gibt es da Themen, die Dich noch immer fuchsen und bei denen Du gern mehr wüsstest? Mir geht es ja selber so, wenn ich mich frage wie ich mir die Zustellung etwa einer Anzeige an den Amtmann im 18. Jahrhundert vorstellen will[4]. 

Da hat sich mein Interesse etwas vom Gerät weg hin zur Kleidung, ganz speziell Hauben, entwickelt. Da sind noch so viele Fragen offen. In dem oben erwähnten Museum habe ich auch auch eine schöne Sammlung von Hauben vorgefunden, z. T. auch aus dem Ende des 18. und frühen 19. Jahrhundert. Diese werde ich mir vornehmen, wenn es die Coronalage wieder zulässt. 

6. When it comes to the shape of cutlery or candle holders, I am always happy to come to you with questions. Are there any topics that still appeal to you and that you would like to know more about? I feel that way myself when I ask myself how I want to imagine the delivery of a report to the bailiff in the 18th century [4].

Since then my interest has moved a little away from the device towards clothing, especially caps. There are still so many questions unanswered. In the museum mentioned above I also found a nice collection of caps, e.g. some also from the end of the 18th and early 19th centuries. I will do this when the corona situation allows it again.

7. Ich selber muss mich ja immer wieder als Fan bestimmter Historiker outen. Hast Du da auch irgendwelche Lieblinge, deren Forschungen Du wegen des Inhalts oder des Stils besonders gern verschlungen hast?

Eigentlich nicht, ich hab früher sehr gerne Biografien über historische Persönlichkeiten, z. B. von Brigitte Hamann, gelesen.

7. I myself have to repeatedly come out as a fan of certain historians. Do you have any favorites whose research you particularly enjoyed devouring because of the content or style?

Not really, I used to like to read biographies about historical personalities, for example by Brigitte Hamann.

8. Du hast ja eine Weile im Antiquitätenhandel gearbeitet. Ich stelle mir das spannend vor, da man ja dabei Originalen nahe kommt, die sonst nicht publiziert werden oder bisweilen nichtmal zugänglich sind. Gab es da besondere Funde, die Du für unser Hobby beispielsweise spannend oder aufschlussreich fandest?

Ja das kam hin und wieder vor. Es ist schon nett, z. B. ein altwiener Porzellanservice aus dem 18. Jh. begutachten zu dürfen. Mein Highlight aber war ein Augsburger Fächer aus der Mitte des 18. Jhs., der ganz wunderschön mit einer Maskenballszene bemalt war. Er befand sich in einem sehr schlechten Zustand. Zum Glück konnte ich ihn in gute Hände vermitteln, und ich weiß, dass er inzwischen vorbildlich restauriert worden ist. 8. You worked in the antique trade for a while. I imagine it to be exciting, because you get close to originals that are otherwise not published or are sometimes not even accessible. Were there any special finds that you found exciting or informative for our hobby, for example?

Yes that happened every now and then. It was really nice for example to be able to examine an old Viennese porcelain service from the 18th century. But my highlight was an Augsburgian fan from the middle of the 18th century, which was beautifully painted with a masked ball scene. It was in very bad condition. Fortunately, I was able to put it in good hands, and I know that it has now been restored in an exemplary manner. 9. Du bist ja in der Organisation einer kleinen Veranstaltung in Deiner Gegend auf Schloss Ortenburg involviert. Willst Du dafür ein bisschen Werbung machen und erzählen, was da die Teilnehmer oder Besucher dieses Jahr, wenn alles gut geht, erwarten kann?

Sehr gerne! Die Veranstaltung spielt vor dem Hintergrund der besonderen Geschichte Ortenburgs als protestantische Enklave im erzkatholischen Niederbayern und Zufluchtsort für die wegen ihres Glaubens verfolgten österreichischen Protestanten bis zum Toleranzpatent Josef II 1781. Die sogenannten Kryptoprotestanten aus Österreich zogen  immer wieder heimlich nach Ortenburg, um dort einen „richtigen“ Gottesdienst besuchen zu können.  Einen solchen Zug von Geheimprotestanten, die als Wallfahrer zu dem in der Nähe gelegenen Wallfahrtsort Sammarai getarnt sind, wollen wir Anfang Juli darstellen. Er wird in zwei Tagen von Schärding  in Oberösterreich nach Ortenburg führen.

Daneben sollen auch einige Räume des Schlosses, das sich z. T. noch in Restaurierung befindet, mit einigen Displays und Szenen belebt werden.

Das Schloss hat großes Potential, wenn die Restaurierungsarbeiten abgeschlossen sind. Die Ausstattung stammt von der Renaissance bis in die Zeit um 1800.  Die prächtige Renaissancedecke in der Schlosskapelle ist spektakulär! Sogar die historische Küche ist erhalten, aber leider aktuell in keinem guten Zustand. Ich hoffe sehr, dass sie wiederhergestellt und zur Nutzung zur Verfügung gestellt werden kann. Es gibt auch einen Backofen!

 9. You are involved in the organization of a small event in your area at Schloss Ortenburg. Do you want to advertise this a little and tell what the participants or visitors can expect this year if everything goes well?

With pleasure! The event takes place against the background of the special history of Ortenburg as a Protestant enclave in arch-Catholic Lower Bavaria and a place of refuge for the Austrian Protestants persecuted for their faith up to the Josef II tolerance patent in 1781. The so-called crypto-Protestants from Austria kept secretly moving to Ortenburg to be able to attend a "real" church service. At the beginning of July we want to depict such a procession of secret Protestants disguised as pilgrims to the nearby pilgrimage site of Sammarai. In two days it will lead from Schärding in Upper Austria to Ortenburg.

In addition, some rooms of the castle, which partly are still under restoration, will be animated with some displays and scenes.

The castle has great potential once the restoration work is complete. The furnishings date from the Renaissance to around 1800. The magnificent Renaissance ceiling in the castle chapel is spectacular! Even the historic kitchen has been preserved, but is unfortunately currently in poor condition. I sincerely hope that it can be restored and made available for use. There is also an oven!

10. Am Ende habe ich eine beinahe obligatorische Frage, die mich brennend interessiert. Wie ist es für Dich auf den Veranstaltungen? Hast Du besondere Erlebnisse, die sich Dir eingebrannt haben? Konntest Du auch Aufschlussreiches daraus für Dein Leben als Historikerin entnehmen?

Ich freue mich immer auf die Menschen, die ich bei Veranstaltungen treffe, weil sie meine Interessen teilen und sich ebenso wie ich bemühen, ein stimmiges Geschichtsbild für die Besucher zu liefern. Ich liebe es sehr, mich in einer historischen Umgebung zu bewegen und mich in die Vergangenheit einzufühlen. Das gelingt natürlich am besten, wenn keine Zuschauer da sind, also wenn die letzten Besucher das Museum verlassen haben oder die Veranstaltung fernab von Publikum stattfindet. Wenn mir ein paar Momente gelingen, in denen ich mich in diese Zeit versetzen kann, ist das ein Geschenk. Auf dem Handelszug über den Goldenen Steig im Bayerischen Wald konnte ich z. So schön es auf solchen Veranstaltungen ist, sie zeigen mir immer auch, dass ich schon ganz froh bin, in der Gegenwart zu leben – auch wenn es aktuell schwierig ist.

10. At the end I have an almost mandatory question that interests me very much. How is it for you at the events? Do you have special experiences that have burned into you? Were you able to find anything informative about your life as a historian?

I always look forward to the people I meet at events because they share my interests and, like me, try to provide a coherent picture of history for the visitors. I really love moving around in historical surroundings and empathizing with the past. Of course, this works best when there are no spectators, i.e. when the last visitors have left the museum or the event is taking place away from the audience. If I can manage a few moments in which I can relocate myself to this time, it is a gift. As nice as it is at such events, they always show me that I'm already very happy to live in the present - even if it's currently difficult.
