Jahresausklang / End of the year

The year is drawing to a close and I want to look back and ahead with our readers. In 2020 all events we organized were canceled. The research in Schwäbisch Hall itself also fell by the wayside. Instead, we could devote more time to our blog. As a result, we managed about two entries per month. We have started 2 new series on interviews with historians and on redoubts. Our contributions to the battle at Grimbergen in 1745 and our report of the hike through the former territory of the imperial city of Hall, which we undertook in August, were read particularly well. Of course, I'm particularly happy about the latter, as it fits in with the original background of our blog.

Auf Festung Königsstein. - On the Königsstein fortress in Saxonia.

- A view on the battlefield of Rocoux from our first test game.

Depending on the situation, we ourselves hardly have any plans for events in the next year. In any case, we will continue to let you take part in our journey through the theaters of war with the 275-year cycle. The battles of Piacenza and Rocoux will therefore be highlights next year and we have invested a lot of effort in research. There was even a test match for Rocoux. The subject of servants is unfortunately still on hold due to the current situation. Other civilian projects would also include aspects such as the clothing of the peasantry. The mayor Gunkel would actually need leather trousers, as these were practically compulsory for Halle farmers. In addition, the end of the Mainhardt gang casts its shadow. In any case, this is a topic for which we will review and supplement the material available to us. The series started this year will be continued. We will also make one or two side trips to fortress works. I don't just want to thank our loyal readers, but especially those who have recently left comments that have been incredibly motivating.

Jh.. - A very lovely gift by a friend: Sprüngerli with original models. Last weekend we had a very small soirée at home (3 persons only) with dancing, playing cards and delicious meals using cooking recipes from the 18th century.

  1. Was our battle of Rocoux your first test game? If so, are more planned? I would be interested in seeing your 18th century menu.

    1. I plan other test games for the future. I don't know which I will do with you and others as Play-by-mail. I suppose that I can manage to play one or two test games with play-by-mail next year. As play-by-mail is very time consuming I will chose larger battles for play-by-mail such as Laeffeldt. I had the impression after several play-by-mail battles that it's more interesting for you and other gamers to have more units and even brigades to write orders for them.

Play-by-mail battles planned for next year therefore are:
      Piacenza
      &
      Laeffeldt.
I certainly will invite especially player which were satisfied with my system of orders and messengers.

Some other battles on my scedule are:
combat of Ramillies 1746 (test game was nice)
Piacenza (2nd game on the 275th anniversary)
      Rottofredo
      Rocoux (on the 275th anniversary).

Plans depend heavily on the restrictions next year. Maybe more gaming if again all Living history events in museums and castles are canceled. Although I miss the events. There still is a hope that the administrations learned from 2020 and changed there decissions to forbid events in summer and allow too late when the situation changed again...

  2. Your blog is a source of great interest and pleasure. That test game looks marvellous and I look forward to reading and seeing the follow-up.
All the best to you all. Regards, James

    1. I hope to write a full report of the battle next year on october 11th on the 275th anniversary. As the largest battle in Flanders during the period and of the 18th century until that day it was very time consuming. I needed more time to built up the terrain and units that gaming itself. For a more proper representation of a battle of that scale (120.000 French alone) I would certainly need a larger table, gaming room and even a lot of more terrain features such as buildings and road sections.

You're welcome and I'm happy about every new comment and reader. I hope that you will like my other reports such as those of Melle, Grimbergern, Fontenoy and Pfaffenhofen as well.

      Cheers
